Operations Supervisor

Position Summary

The Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily collection operations, managing route performance, supervising drivers and laborers, coordinating with maintenance teams, and ensuring all activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. This role plays a critical part in maintaining service excellence, maximizing productivity, promoting a strong safety culture, and supporting both operational and maintenance functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operations Management

  • Organize and schedule personnel, equipment, and other resources necessary to accomplish daily operational activities.
  • Coordinate daily operational needs with the Maintenance Department to ensure equipment readiness and minimize downtime.
  • Plan, distribute, monitor, and follow up on daily route assignments to ensure customers are serviced according to company standards and service agreements.
  • Manage the end-of-day check-in process, capturing and communicating key service, safety, customer, and equipment issues.
  • Monitor driver and laborer attendance, productivity, and hours of service while minimizing overtime and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review route demand and volume trends, identify opportunities for improved efficiencies, and recommend route modifications when appropriate.
  • Establish, monitor, and communicate productivity, service, and safety goals for routes and personnel.
  • Assist with data collection, reporting, and tracking for performance and incentive programs.
  • Coordinate temporary labor resources as needed to support operational requirements.
  • Document recurring operational issues and develop corrective action plans to prevent future occurrences.
  • Ensure service failures, missed pickups, container swaps, and route issues are promptly identified, communicated, and resolved.
  • Communicate customer concerns, sales opportunities, service issues, and operational updates to appropriate departments.
  • Notify customer service teams of route schedules, delivery timelines, and service changes.

Safety and Compliance

  • Lead and promote a culture of safety through active participation, accountability, and leadership by example.
  • Conduct regular in-field and desktop safety observations and audits.
  • Prepare and lead safety meetings, training sessions, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce safety protocols, procedures, and best practices.
  • Conduct Root Cause Investigations for all accidents, injuries, incidents, and near misses.
  • Ensure corrective actions, retraining, and disciplinary measures are implemented consistently when necessary.
  • Visit customer locations and job sites to identify, evaluate, and resolve safety concerns.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with company policies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), OSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain all required operational and compliance documentation, including DVIRs, driver logs, attendance records, safety reports, and regulatory filings.

Team Leadership and Supervision

  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management for drivers, laborers, and other assigned personnel.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and development opportunities.
  • Manage employee schedules, time-off requests, disciplinary actions, and workplace concerns.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and productive work environment.
  • Promote positive employee relations and, where applicable, maintain effective working relationships with union representatives.
  • Lead employee engagement efforts while supporting company values and operational goals.

Qualifications Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in operations, transportation, logistics, maintenance, waste management, fleet operations, or related industries.
  • Relevant industry experience may be substituted for formal education requirements.

Certifications and Licensing

  • Valid Class B CDL or higher preferred, with a safe driving record and current Medical Card.
  • Record of safe driving with no serious violations or accidents.
  • ASE Certifications (T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, or ASE Master Certification) preferred.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, coaching, and employee development skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage both operations and maintenance-related activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience conducting route assessments and implementing operational improvements.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with maintenance management software, routing systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to analyze operational data and make informed business decisions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.
