Sr Attorney: Insurance Coverage Liability

Practice Focus: Insurance Coverage – Liability
We are currently seeking a senior-level attorney with substantial experience in liability insurance coverage to join our Insurance Coverage practice. The ideal candidate will have a strong background advising insurers and related clients on complex coverage issues, including policy interpretation, coverage opinions, and coverage litigation involving third-party liability claims.
Core Responsibilities:
- Analyze and interpret liability insurance policies, including:
- Commercial General Liability (CGL)
- Automobile liability
- Excess and umbrella policies
- Additional insured endorsements and manuscript provisions
- Provide coverage advice and analysis regarding:
- Duty to defend and duty to indemnify
- Trigger of coverage
- Allocation and exhaustion
- Notice and late-notice issues
- Exclusions and limitations
- “Other insurance” provisions
- Draft and review:
- Coverage opinions
- Reservation of rights letters
- Denial and partial denial letters
- Coverage correspondence with claims professionals and insureds
- Handle insurance coverage litigation, including:
- Declaratory judgment actions
- Coverage-related motion practice
- Discovery focused on coverage issues
- Hearings and, where applicable, trial and appellate support
- Advise clients on coverage strategy in connection with underlying liability litigation, including coordination with defense counsel and monitoring counsel.
- Communicate directly with insurance carriers, claims professionals, and in-house counsel regarding coverage positions and litigation strategy.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 6 years of substantive insurance coverage experience, with a primary focus on liability coverage
- Demonstrated experience analyzing and applying liability insurance policies
- Prior experience drafting formal coverage opinions and position letters
- Meaningful involvement in insurance coverage litigation
- Ability to manage coverage matters with limited supervision
Candidates whose experience includes insurance defense work may be considered if they can demonstrate sustained, substantive involvement in liability coverage analysis and coverage decision-making.
