Assistant Project Manager – Structural Steel Erection
A growing and respected structural steel fabricator and erector is seeking an Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support the planning and execution of structural steel erection projects. This role is ideal for someone with strong field experience in steel erection who is looking to transition into or continue developing a career in project management.
The Assistant Project Manager will work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and field crews to support project planning, documentation, and coordination. This role will involve regular visits to job sites and collaboration with field teams to ensure projects are executed safely and efficiently.
Projects are typically located within a 4-hour radius of Hendersonville / Asheville, North Carolina, with travel ranging from 30–70% depending on project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers with project coordination and documentation
- Prepare and manage RFIs, change orders, and project paperwork
- Assist with project planning, steel erection sequencing, and scheduling
- Review drawings and assist with material takeoffs and scope reviews
- Coordinate with Field Superintendents, Foremen, and erection crews
- Visit job sites several days per week to support field operations
- Assist with site-specific erection planning and logistics
- Support project tracking, scheduling updates, and documentation
- Help coordinate equipment, deliveries, and jobsite requirements
Qualifications
- 3+ years of structural steel erection experience
- Previous experience as a Field Foreman, Field Supervisor, Assistant Superintendent, Project Engineer, or Assistant Project Manager
- Experience working on 500+ ton structural steel projects
- Strong understanding of steel erection sequencing and field coordination
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and erection plans
- Comfortable traveling to job sites and hauling equipment when needed
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to travel 30–70% to project sites within a 4-hour radius of Hendersonville / Asheville, NC
Preferred
- Experience transitioning from field operations into project management
- Familiarity with construction scheduling and project management tools
- Background working for a structural steel fabricator or erector
Compensation & Benefits
- $70,000 – $85,000 base salary
- Per diem when traveling
- Truck allowance
