JOB TITLE: Hauling Operations Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

The Hauling Operations Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the hauling division, ensuring operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and consistently. This role involves setting clear objectives for individual team members and the department overall. Developing, implementing, and continuously improving standard operating procedures is key to achieving these targets. Strong leadership, with a focus on coaching and mentoring, is essential to support the growth and success of the hauling team.

Hours of work: 5:45 am until route completion

Reports to: General Manager or COO

JOB REQUIREMENTS & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and other relevant federal and state regulations.
  • Familiarity with local road networks and highway systems.
  • In-depth understanding of the trash and recycling industry.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Skilled in using software tools such as MS Office, Kronos, and database management systems.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and develop effective operational solutions.
  • Competence in resolving conflicts and managing disputes.
  • Well-versed in employee labor laws.
  • Excellent professional communication skills.
  • Ability to cultivate a customer-focused mindset within the department.
  • Demonstrated leadership by example.
  • Ability to perform effectively under challenging conditions, including exposure to waste materials and harsh weather.
  • Possession of a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air-brake endorsement is preferred or willingness to obtain within six months of hire.

JOB DUTIES:

As a Hauling Operations Manager, your primary responsibilities include:

Productivity:

  • Enhance route planning to maximize resource efficiency while meeting customer needs. Key metrics include:
    • Tons collected per labor hour.
    • Tons collected per mile driven.
    • Daily lifts and stops completed.
    • Monitoring and minimizing missed stops.

       

  • Safety:

    Ensure the hauling division operates in compliance with safety standards by:
    • Conducting regular driver performance observations through route supervisors.
    • Providing training to new drivers or those unfamiliar with equipment.
    • Investigating accidents and injuries thoroughly, identifying root causes, and enforcing corrective actions.
  • Compliance:

    • Oversee driver service hours.

    • Manage pre-trip and post-trip truck inspections.

Customer Service:

  • Manage significant customer concerns, especially in coordination with municipalities.
  • Monitor and work to reduce missed stops in service areas.

Administrative:

  • Maintain adequate staffing levels and communicate needs to HR.
  • Manage payroll processing.
  • Participate in interviewing and selecting new employees.
