Job Title: Structural Steel Draftsman – Estimator Trainee
Overview:
A key client of gpac is offering a unique opportunity for a Structural Steel Draftsman looking to transition into a long-term Estimating career. This role is ideal for someone with 3–5 years of detailing experience who is eager to move off the drafting board and into an office-based role that will shape their future in the steel construction industry. The successful candidate will receive hands-on mentorship from seasoned estimators and leadership committed to professional growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in preparing structural steel estimates for commercial and industrial projects
Interpret architectural and structural drawings, blueprints, and specifications
Support senior estimators in quantity takeoffs, cost calculations, and bid preparation
Collaborate with detailing, project management, and fabrication teams
Learn pricing, material specs, labor rates, and vendor coordination as part of the training
Maintain estimating files and support bid strategy discussions
Qualifications:
3–5 years of experience in structural steel detailing
Proficiency or exposure to Tekla Structures or SDS/2
Strong understanding of steel fabrication and erection drawings
Excellent attention to detail and ability to read technical plans
Strong communication and organizational skills
Motivated to learn estimating with the long-term goal of growing into a full-time estimator role
