Job Description

Operations Supervisor – Hauling (Waste & Recycling)

Our client is seeking a hands-on leader to supervise daily waste and recycling collection operations for commercial, residential, and roll-off customers. This role drives route execution, safety, service quality, and team performance in a fast-paced, field-centric environment. (Reports to the Operations Manager.)

What You’ll Do

  • Lead frontline teams of drivers, helpers, and dispatch/scale/clerical staff; set expectations at start-of-shift huddles and conduct ride-alongs.
  • Execute daily routes for efficiency and service: monitor GPS/telematics, adjust dispatch, resolve service exceptions, and ensure route completion.
  • Champion safety: run toolbox talks, enforce PPE/DVIR, conduct incident/near-miss investigations, and coach safe work practices and DOT compliance.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance (DOT/OSHA and local environmental rules): logs, DVIRs, weight tickets, and facility procedures.
  • Coach, train, and develop employees; document performance, administer corrective action, and recognize top performance.
  • Manage day-to-day labor and timekeeping: approve timecards, control OT, coordinate vacation/coverage, and support workforce planning.
  • Handle customer escalations: partner with CSR/dispatch to resolve missed pickups, contamination, blocked access, and service changes.
  • Support equipment readiness: coordinate with Fleet on PMs, red tags, road calls, and shop priorities; reduce downtime and swaps.
  • Track KPIs and report results: on-time starts, route completion %, missed stops, safety metrics, OT %, and service quality.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with new-hire onboarding, skills training, vendor coordination, inventory of containers/carts, and continuous improvement projects.

What We’re Looking For

  • 2–5+ years of frontline leadership in waste/recycling, transportation, logistics, or related field; union experience a plus.
  • Working knowledge of safety programs, DOT compliance, and environmental practices.
  • Proven coaching and accountability skills; comfortable giving ride-along feedback and conducting investigations.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills; calm under pressure with real-time decision making.
  • Tech-savvy with routing/telematics/timekeeping tools (e.g., Routeware, Samsara, Geotab, Dispatch, TMW, etc.).
  • CDL (A/B) preferred or willingness to obtain; ability to work early mornings, occasional weekends/holidays, and respond to emergencies.

Why Apply

  • Lead a frontline team and see your results daily.
  • Build culture, improve routes, and elevate safety and service quality.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits with growth path to Operations Manager.
