The Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating daily waste collection and recycling routes to ensure efficient, timely, and cost-effective service delivery. This role acts as the communication hub between drivers, customers, and operations teams, making real-time decisions to resolve service issues, optimize routes, and maintain productivity across the fleet.
Key Responsibilities Route Coordination & Scheduling
- Assign and dispatch daily routes for residential, commercial, and roll-off drivers
- Monitor route progress throughout the day using GPS and routing systems
- Adjust routes in real time due to delays, breakdowns, weather, or service issues
- Ensure all scheduled pickups are completed efficiently and on time
Driver Communication & Support
- Serve as primary point of contact for drivers during routes
- Provide directions, service updates, and troubleshooting support
- Handle missed stops, overloaded containers, and customer service requests
- Coordinate replacement trucks or drivers when needed
Operations Coordination
- Work closely with operations managers, supervisors, and customer service teams
- Communicate service changes such as new starts, cancellations, or container swaps
- Ensure proper documentation of route exceptions and service issues
Data & System Management
- Use dispatch and route optimization systems to track fleet performance
- Enter updates into routing software and maintain accurate service records
- Analyze route efficiency and recommend improvements
Problem Solving & Issue Resolution
- Respond quickly to service disruptions (traffic, equipment failure, missed pickups)
- Resolve customer complaints related to service timing or completion
- Escalate complex operational issues to management when necessary
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma required; associate degree preferred
- 1–3 years of dispatch, logistics, transportation, or operations experience
- Strong multitasking and real-time decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
Preferred Experience (Waste Industry)
- Experience with waste, recycling, or transportation logistics
- Familiarity with route-based service operations (front-load, roll-off, residential)
- Knowledge of dispatch systems (e.g., routing software, GPS fleet tracking tools)
- Understanding of driver workflows and CDL operations
Tools & Systems
- Route optimization and dispatch software (e.g., AMCS, Routeware, RTA, Fleetmatics)
- GPS fleet tracking systems
- Microsoft Excel / reporting tools
- Customer service and ticketing systems
Work Environment
- Office-based role in a fast-paced operations center
- Constant communication with drivers in the field
- High-volume, time-sensitive environment (especially mornings and mid-day peaks)
- Occasional overtime depending on operational demands
