Purchasing Manager – Mechanical Construction

A well-established mechanical contractor is seeking an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead procurement activities across commercial and industrial mechanical construction projects. This individual will work closely with estimating, project management, field operations, and vendors to ensure materials and equipment are purchased competitively and delivered in accordance with project schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage purchasing of HVAC equipment, plumbing materials, piping, valves, fittings, sheet metal, fixtures, and mechanical equipment
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, freight, and purchasing agreements with manufacturers, suppliers, and vendors
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key mechanical industry vendors
  • Coordinate procurement and long-lead equipment with Project Managers and field teams
  • Review project specifications, equipment schedules, estimates, and buyout requirements
  • Solicit and evaluate vendor quotes to ensure competitive pricing and scope coverage
  • Track purchase orders, deliveries, backorders, and material availability
  • Identify opportunities for bulk purchasing, preferred-vendor agreements, and cost savings
  • Monitor material pricing and market conditions and communicate potential impacts to operations
  • Develop purchasing procedures, vendor-performance metrics, and procurement controls

Ideal Background

  • 5+ years of purchasing/procurement experience, preferably within mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, piping, or commercial construction
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment and construction materials
  • Established HVAC/plumbing supplier and manufacturer relationships is a major plus
  • Strong negotiation, cost-analysis, and vendor-management skills
  • Experience working with PMs, estimators, and field operations
  • ERP/purchasing software experience preferred
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
