Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical HVAC Estimator with a strong background in commercial construction and the ability to develop accurate, competitive estimates for complex mechanical projects. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working for a mechanical contractor and a proven track record of estimating large-scale HVAC construction projects.

This position will be responsible for taking projects from initial plan and specification review through final estimate, bid submission, and turnover to the project management team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed estimates for commercial and institutional HVAC and mechanical construction projects.
  • Develop estimates for projects ranging from approximately $5 million to $25 million.
  • Review mechanical drawings, plans, specifications, addenda, and other bid documents to establish project requirements.
  • Analyze complete project scope, identify exclusions, clarify bid requirements, and recognize potential cost and schedule risks.
  • Review and validate ductwork, piping, equipment, and material takeoffs.
  • Solicit and evaluate pricing from subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and manufacturers.
  • Develop competitive project pricing while maintaining accuracy and appropriate margins.
  • Communicate with General Contractors and other project stakeholders throughout the estimating and bidding process.
  • Evaluate major equipment and material requirements and assist with purchasing decisions.
  • Prepare major purchase orders, subcontract agreements, and work authorizations as required.
  • Participate in estimate reviews, scope reviews, bid strategy meetings, and project turnover meetings.
  • Provide a thorough handoff of awarded projects to the Project Management team.
  • Maintain organized estimating documentation and supporting project information.

Ideal Background

  • 10+ years of mechanical/HVAC estimating experience, preferably with a commercial mechanical contractor.
  • Extensive experience with commercial HVAC construction and mechanical contracting.
  • Demonstrated success estimating projects in the $5M–$25M range.
  • Experience with both new construction and renovation/retrofit projects.
  • Background estimating projects within environments such as:
    • Commercial
    • Institutional
    • Healthcare
    • Laboratory
    • Higher education and K-12
  • Ability to independently read, interpret, and analyze complex mechanical plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong understanding of commercial HVAC systems and installation methods.

Technical Knowledge

Candidates should have strong working knowledge of:

  • Chilled water systems and chillers
  • Boilers and heating systems
  • Air-handling equipment
  • Ventilation systems
  • Ductwork
  • Hydronic and mechanical piping
  • HVAC controls
  • Commercial mechanical equipment and materials
  • Construction estimating practices and methodologies
