Senior Electrical Engineer / HVAC — P.E.

Salary: $130,000–$180,000 per year. Experience: 8+ years. License: Professional Engineer (P.E.)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer with strong HVAC and building systems experience to lead the electrical design and engineering of complex commercial, industrial, and building projects.

The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of electrical engineering experience, an active P.E. license, and hands-on experience working with HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, building power distribution, controls, and energy systems.

This role will work closely with mechanical, HVAC, architectural, and construction teams to deliver coordinated, code-compliant, and energy-efficient building systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead electrical engineering and design for commercial, industrial, and building projects.

• Provide electrical engineering support for HVAC systems and mechanical equipment, including air handlers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, boilers, compressors, VAV systems, and associated equipment.

• Design electrical power distribution systems serving HVAC and mechanical equipment.

• Develop electrical plans, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, load calculations, equipment schedules, specifications, and construction documents.

• Coordinate electrical requirements with HVAC/mechanical engineers and contractors.

• Design and review power, lighting, grounding, emergency power, controls, and building electrical systems.

• Evaluate electrical loads associated with HVAC equipment and building mechanical systems.

• Coordinate HVAC controls, BAS/BMS interfaces, motor controls, VFDs, starters, and related electrical systems.

• Review equipment submittals and shop drawings for electrical and HVAC-related requirements.

• Perform electrical calculations, including load, short-circuit, voltage-drop, and coordination studies as applicable.

• Ensure designs comply with applicable NEC, NFPA, ASHRAE, energy codes, and local building codes.

• Conduct site investigations, equipment assessments, inspections, and troubleshooting.

• Coordinate with architects, mechanical engineers, contractors, owners, vendors, and other project stakeholders.

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.

• Manage technical project requirements, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.

• Review and seal engineering documents as permitted by applicable state licensing requirements.

• Support project proposals, estimating, client meetings, and business development activities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.

• 8+ years of professional electrical engineering experience.

• Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.

• Significant experience with HVAC systems and building mechanical equipment.

• Strong understanding of electrical systems serving HVAC and mechanical equipment.

• Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, ASHRAE, energy codes, and applicable building codes.

• Experience coordinating electrical and mechanical/HVAC systems on construction projects.

• Experience with electrical design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar platforms.

• Strong project management, communication, and technical documentation skills.

• Ability to lead projects and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with commercial, industrial, healthcare, data center, manufacturing, or large-scale facilities.

• Experience with central plant systems, chilled-water systems, boiler systems, or large mechanical equipment.

• Experience with HVAC controls, BAS/BMS, VFDs, motor control centers, and building automation.

• Experience with energy-efficiency projects and building energy management.

• Experience performing or reviewing electrical/HVAC commissioning.

• Experience managing consultants, contractors, vendors, and project teams.

• Familiarity with LEED, ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, or other energy-efficiency standards.

Compensation

$130,000–$180,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, P.E. licensing, and location.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a licensed Professional Engineer with 8+ years of experience who understands both electrical systems and HVAC/mechanical building systems. You should be comfortable taking ownership of projects, working directly with clients and contractors, reviewing designs, solving field problems, and leading multidisciplinary engineering efforts.
