CONSTRUCTION COST ACCOUNTANT

An established construction company is looking for a skilled Construction Cost Accountant to oversee project accounting, monitor job costs, and support the financial performance of multiple construction projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee project accounting activities from initial job setup through final closeout
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to review budgets, cost forecasts, profitability, and revenue recognition
  • Process and reconcile subcontractor invoices, vendor bills, and project-related expenses
  • Prepare monthly job cost reports and investigate discrepancies, cost overruns, and budget variances
  • Manage progress billing, AIA billing applications, and over/under billing reconciliations
  • Track accounts receivable, retainage, collections, and subcontractor payment schedules
  • Review subcontract agreements, change orders, and contract adjustments for accuracy
  • Ensure proper lien waivers, billing backup, and contractual documentation are maintained
  • Monitor project financial trends and communicate potential risks to leadership
  • Maintain accurate financial records and support timely month-end reporting
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen accounting procedures, internal controls, and reporting systems

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of construction accounting or cost accounting experience with a General Contractor or Subcontractor
  • Proven experience overseeing job costs and financial reporting for multiple active projects
  • At least 2 years of experience using a construction ERP or project accounting platform, such as Acumatica, Procore, Viewpoint, or a similar system
  • Strong understanding of job costing, AIA and progress billing, change orders, and construction contracts
  • Experience with lien waivers, contract compliance, retainage, and project billing requirements
  • Familiarity with cost-plus contracts is preferred
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work directly with Project Managers and accounting leadership
  • Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and work independently in a fast-paced construction environment
