An insurance underwriter's job is to assess the risk of potential insurance applicants and decide whether to offer them coverage:
- Review applications: Underwriters review insurance applications and supporting documentation.
- Assess clients: Underwriters evaluate clients' financial status, backgrounds, and other information, such as age, marital status, medical history, and driving record.
- Analyze risk: Underwriters use underwriting software to analyze the risk profile of potential clients.
- Determine coverage: Underwriters decide whether to offer coverage and, if so, what the terms and conditions will be. They also determine coverage amounts and premiums.
- Re-assess risk: Underwriters re-assess risk when policies come up for renewal.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years of insurance underwriting experience.
- State insurance license (Property & Casualty).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Customer-centric mindset with a passion for helping others.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience with insurance software and CRM systems.
- Willingness to pursue professional designations (e.g., CISR, CIC).
