The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing and directing all nursing operations in a long-term care facility. This role involves ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, maintaining high standards of patient care, managing nursing staff, and fostering a supportive environment for residents and their families. The DON is a key member of the leadership team and plays a vital role in achieving the facility’s mission and goals.
Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure high-quality resident care.
Oversee the development and implementation of individualized care plans for residents.
Monitor resident care activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Provide clinical guidance and support to nursing staff, ensuring evidence-based practices are followed.
Recruit, train, and retain a skilled nursing team, including RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.
Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide coaching to nursing staff.
Schedule nursing staff to ensure adequate coverage and minimize overtime costs.
Address staff concerns and foster a positive work environment.
Ensure the facility complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards, including CMS and OSHA guidelines.
Prepare for and participate in inspections and audits by regulatory agencies.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of resident care and staff activities.
Collaborate with the Administrator to develop and manage the nursing department’s budget.
Monitor expenditures and optimize resource allocation.
Ensure proper inventory management of medical supplies and equipment.
Act as a liaison between residents, families, and the care team to address concerns and promote satisfaction.
Foster a culture of respect, dignity, and compassion for residents and their families.
Organize and participate in care plan meetings with residents and families.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration preferred.
Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State].
Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role in long-term care or a related setting.
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
In-depth knowledge of long-term care regulations and best practices.
Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare software.
Ability to multitask and handle high-pressure situations effectively.
This position involves working in a healthcare facility with potential exposure to infectious diseases and chemicals.
The role requires occasional lifting of patients or equipment and extended periods of standing or walking.
