Job Summary

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing and directing all nursing operations in a long-term care facility. This role involves ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, maintaining high standards of patient care, managing nursing staff, and fostering a supportive environment for residents and their families. The DON is a key member of the leadership team and plays a vital role in achieving the facility’s mission and goals.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure high-quality resident care.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of individualized care plans for residents.

  • Monitor resident care activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Provide clinical guidance and support to nursing staff, ensuring evidence-based practices are followed.

Staff Management:

  • Recruit, train, and retain a skilled nursing team, including RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide coaching to nursing staff.

  • Schedule nursing staff to ensure adequate coverage and minimize overtime costs.

  • Address staff concerns and foster a positive work environment.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure the facility complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards, including CMS and OSHA guidelines.

  • Prepare for and participate in inspections and audits by regulatory agencies.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of resident care and staff activities.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Collaborate with the Administrator to develop and manage the nursing department’s budget.

  • Monitor expenditures and optimize resource allocation.

  • Ensure proper inventory management of medical supplies and equipment.

Resident and Family Engagement:

  • Act as a liaison between residents, families, and the care team to address concerns and promote satisfaction.

  • Foster a culture of respect, dignity, and compassion for residents and their families.

  • Organize and participate in care plan meetings with residents and families.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration preferred.

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State].

  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role in long-term care or a related setting.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • In-depth knowledge of long-term care regulations and best practices.

  • Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare software.

  • Ability to multitask and handle high-pressure situations effectively.


Work Environment

  • This position involves working in a healthcare facility with potential exposure to infectious diseases and chemicals.

  • The role requires occasional lifting of patients or equipment and extended periods of standing or walking.
