Junior Tax Associate Wanted for Law Firm in Chicago:
This role offers hands-on experience, direct mentorship from seasoned tax practitioners, and the opportunity to develop deep expertise across complex U.S. and international tax matters.
Position Overview
The Junior Tax Associate will support the firm’s tax practice through research, drafting, planning, and compliance across a wide variety of sophisticated client matters.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct legal research on federal, state, and international tax issues
Draft memoranda, legal opinions, and client correspondence
Assist in tax planning for business transactions, M&A, and reorganizations
Review and analyze tax returns, financial statements, and deal documents
Support senior attorneys in tax controversy, audits, and compliance matters
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments
Participate in client meetings and prepare related summaries
Prepare or review federal and state income tax compliance for individuals, partnerships, S corps, C corps, nonprofits, and trusts
Evaluate business structures for tax efficiency and liability mitigation
Coordinate alongside accountants, fiduciaries, advisors, and co-counsel
Assist with IRS notices, voluntary disclosures, and related negotiations
Requirements
J.D. from an accredited law school
Active license to practice law in Illinois
3–5+ years of progressive tax experience (legal or public accounting)
LL.M. in Taxation, CPA, CFP, or similar credential preferred
Experience in income tax, compliance, estate planning, or tax controversy
Strong drafting, writing, and analytical skills
Preferred experience within a family office, private client firm, or wealth-management environment

Position Overview
The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of experience advising affluent clients on federal and state income tax, gift and estate tax, compliance, planning, and controversy matters. This individual will manage key client relationships while collaborating with multidisciplinary advisors in a highly sophisticated practice.
Key Responsibilities
Advise on, prepare, and/or review income tax compliance across individuals, corporations, partnerships, S corps, nonprofits, and trusts
Evaluate existing business structures for tax efficiency, risk, and potential leakage
Coordinate with investment advisors, fiduciaries, accountants, and outside counsel to deliver integrated solutions
Lead IRS audits, voluntary disclosures, notices, and negotiations
Monitor tax law developments and relay updates to internal teams and clients
Support high-level estate, gift, and wealth-transfer tax planning strategies
Participate in strategic planning meetings with clients, families, and advisors
Requirements
Active license to practice law in Illinois
10+ years of progressive experience in income tax law, compliance, estate planning, and/or tax controversy
LL.M. in Taxation, CPA, CFP, or similar credential strongly preferred
Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills
Experience advising high-net-worth individuals, families, and privately held businesses
Background in a family office, private client law firm, wealth management practice, or sophisticated tax practice preferred
