Job Description

A Reputable manufacturer in Michigan is seeking a Controls Engineer. 25 years in business. Close knit engineering team. Complex projects. 

Under the general supervision of the Controls Manager, the Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and programming control systems to ensure efficiency and compliance with customer specifications and industry standards. The Controls Engineer works with interdisciplinary teams, including project managers, customers, suppliers, contractors, and engineers to meet system performance and project goals. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide skid package control submittals based on sales estimate, equipment selections, project mechanical and electrical drawings, and building management system plans and specifications.
  • Create control system software programs to meet mechanical design, specifications, and system sequence of operation.
  • Develop package systems for system controls and programming. Software control programs include TRANE, JCI, ALC, Allen Bradley.
  • Perform final system factory testing before shipping when providing controls and programming. Troubleshoot and resolve any mechanical, electrical, and controls equipment faults, failures, and issues on skid systems.
  • Create and provide pre-startup package documents upon customer's startup request. This includes site-specific and pre-startup package documents.
  • Develop complete Control and Power Panel wiring diagrams for Panel Assemblers
  • Coordinate package system site controls installation and systems integration. Work with mechanical, electrical, and BMS control contractors to identify and resolve project scope issues.

Controls Engineer REPORTS TO: Controls Manager

  • Prepare system sheets and other documentation for site startup or commissioning.
  • Compose and email final startup reports to customer and distributors.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to both internal and external personnel regarding the functionality of HVAC system packages
  • Review system P&ID, point I/O summary and sequence of operation and any provided drawings and specifications. If required, request quote for turn-key programming & installation.
  • Create controller & HMI programs as required. Load controllers & HMI, verify control panel point I/O, wiring & operation, verify control panel sequence of operation and HMI programming & operation.
  • Verify and test each pump and all control devices on skid. Perform system flow & efficiency test as required (refer to system sales datasheet).
  • Verify all controls operate per sequence of operation in automatic and all operating modes. Point to point from the screen to the device and or equipment.
  • Verify all test data is entered, four-point pump flow, pressure and efficiency tests.
  • Comply with project schedules and industry standards
  • Develop system documentation and control manuals
  • Participate in process improvement activities including Lean, 5S, visual management, and other initiatives.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/ EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven work experience as a Controls Engineer or similar role
  • Proficiency in software control programs (TRANE, JCI, ALC, Allen Bradley).
  • Proficiency in electrical wiring, technical assembly, troubleshooting, knowledge of UL standards, and relevant safety certifications
  • Experience using CAD software
  • liaise effectively with suppliers, customers, and internal staff at all levels.
  • Computer skills (MS Office, Open Systems Accounting Software, CAD)
