Commercial Construction Industry - Accountant
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Accountant to lead and manage the accounting function for a growing commercial construction company. This role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and leading an accounting team in a fast-paced, project-driven environment. The ideal candidate brings deep construction accounting experience, strong leadership capability, and advanced proficiency in Foundation Software and Excel.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting team, ensuring accuracy, accountability, and professional development
Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, job costing, and month-end/year-end close
Manage and maintain Foundation Software, ensuring proper setup, job cost integrity, and reporting accuracy
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Ensure accurate job cost accounting, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion reporting, and cost-to-complete forecasts
Oversee cash flow management, billing, collections, and vendor payments
Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
Coordinate with external CPAs on audits, reviews, and tax filings
Support project managers with financial reporting, budget analysis, and variance explanations
Leverage advanced Excel skills to build and maintain financial models, dashboards, and reporting tools
Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and construction industry best practices
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA a plus)
5+ years of accounting experience in the commercial construction industry
Hands-on experience with Foundation Software required
Proven experience leading or supervising an accounting team
Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and construction billing methods
Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, complex formulas, reporting automation)
Enterprise-level accounting experience preferred
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner cross-functionally
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary: $75,000 – $90,000 (commensurate with experience)
