Confidential Search — Truss Designer (Midwest)

Industry: Building Materials / Component Manufacturing
Role: Roof & Floor Truss Designer
Location: Midwest (commutable to a quiet rural area; within driving distance of multiple metro hubs)
Relocation: Available for qualified candidates

About the Opportunity

A long-established, family-owned building materials manufacturer is seeking a skilled Truss Designer to join its expanding component design team. This is a rare opportunity to work in a stable, growth-oriented environment where designers have autonomy, steady demand, and the ability to influence both production flow and customer relationships.

The company supports residential, light commercial, and multi-family builders and is growing its design capacity to match strong regional demand. Candidates who enjoy a family-friendly pace of life, paired with long-term career stability, will find this role an excellent fit.

What You’ll Do

  • Design custom roof and floor trusses using industry-standard software (MiTek 2020 and integrated platforms).
  • Produce accurate, code-compliant layouts optimized for structural integrity and material efficiency.
  • Manage a steady mix of residential, light commercial, and multi-family design projects.
  • Conduct estimating, blueprint interpretation, loading calculations, and material takeoffs.
  • Coordinate with sales, customer teams, and production to meet deadlines and ensure smooth job flow.
  • Engage in customer-facing communication when needed (relationship building, value-add recommendations).
  • Help mentor junior team members and contribute to ongoing process and workflow improvements.
  • Support long-term growth initiatives, including potential expansion into wall panel design.

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of truss design experience (residential required; commercial/multi-family a plus).
  • Strong proficiency with MiTek software; SBCA Tech 1 certification or equivalent required.
  • Ability to produce 2–3 moderate-size jobs per day with accuracy and independence.
  • Solid foundation in blueprint reading, structural design, estimating, and material optimization.
  • Strong communication and customer-interaction skills; team-oriented mindset.
  • Open to primarily in-office work (hybrid possible for proven performers).
  • Associate’s/Bachelor’s in Engineering, Construction, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must pass background.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $55,000 – $80,000+ (experience-based; mid-range for 5+ year designers).
  • Performance incentives: Bonuses/commission for exceeding production output or revenue targets.
  • Benefits: Health, dental, PTO/holidays, 401(k) match, professional training.
  • Realistic first-year earnings: $65,000 – $90,000+.
  • Career Path: Leadership opportunities in a department with long employee tenure.

Why This Role Is Attractive

  • Work for a financially solid, family-owned company with decades of stability.
  • Join a team known for professionalism, collaboration, and very low turnover.
  • Enjoy both autonomy and support — designers are trusted and valued.
  • Get exposure to diverse project types, not just single-family.
  • Be part of a company with a clear growth plan, strong demand, and investment in design capacity.
