Surveyor – Steel Erection | Structural Steel Fabricator & Erector
A growing and respected structural steel fabricator and erector is seeking an experienced Surveyor to support steel erection layout and field verification on commercial and industrial projects. This is a unique opportunity for a motivated professional to build and develop the company’s in-house surveying capability, as this function is currently outsourced. The right candidate will play a key role in establishing processes, equipment standards, and best practices for surveying operations supporting steel erection.
As a Surveyor, you will be responsible for performing field layout, verifying elevations and alignments, and ensuring steel structures are erected accurately according to project plans. You will work closely with project managers, superintendents, engineers, and erection crews to ensure structural steel is installed safely and precisely.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field layout and surveying for structural steel erection projects
- Verify anchor bolt locations, column lines, elevations, and structural alignments
- Establish and maintain jobsite control points and benchmarks
- Interpret structural drawings, erection plans, and specifications for layout requirements
- Work directly with ironworkers, superintendents, and project managers to support erection activities
- Use surveying equipment such as total stations, GPS systems, and layout software
- Perform as-built surveys and dimensional verification of installed steel
- Document field measurements, survey reports, and layout data
- Assist in developing and implementing in-house surveying processes, procedures, and standards
Qualifications
- 3+ years of construction or structural steel surveying experience
- Experience performing layout for steel erection or commercial construction projects
- Proficiency with total stations, robotic instruments, GPS surveying equipment, and layout software
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, anchor bolt plans, and erection diagrams
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work closely with field crews and erection teams
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required
Preferred
- Experience supporting structural steel erection contractors
- Familiarity with anchor bolt layout, column placement, and steel alignment
- Experience working on commercial, industrial, or large structural steel projects
- Professional Surveyor (PS) license or surveying certifications
- Experience helping develop or lead surveying operations
Compensation & Benefits
- $75,000 – $105,000 DOE (based on experience and qualifications)
