Sales Manager – Lumber & Building Materials
Location: St Cloud, MN 55320
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Status: Exempt (Salaried)
Reports To: General Manager
Position Overview
The Sales Manager is a key leadership role responsible for driving revenue, margin growth, and overall sales performance within the organization. This individual will lead and develop a high-performing sales team including Sales Associates, Estimators, Designers, and Inside Sales/Buyer staff.
The ideal candidate will combine strong leadership skills with deep knowledge of lumber and building material (LMB) sales, ensuring both operational excellence and exceptional customer satisfaction while upholding the company’s long-standing commitment to strong customer and vendor relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Leadership & Performance
- Lead, coach, and develop the sales team to achieve revenue and margin targets
- Set clear individual and team sales goals and monitor performance against KPIs
- Manage the sales pipeline to ensure consistent flow of opportunities and follow-up
- Analyze sales data, pricing, and market trends to identify growth opportunities
- Drive new business development and strengthen existing customer relationships
Operations & Process Management
- Oversee daily operations of assigned sales teams
- Review key reports (open orders, margin performance, customer accounts, etc.)
- Collaborate with operations, dispatch, and receiving teams to ensure smooth customer fulfillment
- Work with leadership to improve processes, systems, and workflows
Team Development & Culture
- Recruit, train, and develop sales staff to improve performance and accountability
- Foster a positive, high-energy, and results-driven team culture
- Ensure team members are aligned with company values and expectations
- Identify staffing needs and coordinate with HR/ownership as needed
Customer & Vendor Relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers and vendors
- Ensure timely and effective resolution of customer inquiries and issues
- Maintain high levels of customer satisfaction through service and product expertise
Financial & Administrative
- Manage sales budgets and monitor expenses
- Track KPIs and ensure adherence to company performance standards
- Complete additional duties as assigned by management
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in lumber, building materials, or related sales industry
- Prior leadership or sales management experience strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Business or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and industry software (e.g., Spruce or similar ERP systems)
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills
- Ability to analyze data, solve problems, and make sound business decisions
- Proven ability to build relationships and lead high-performing teams
