The Manufacturing Tooling Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing processes. This role plays a critical part in ensuring efficient production, high-quality output, and cost-effective operations within a manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop tooling, fixtures, jigs, and gauges to support production processes
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to optimize manufacturability and efficiency
- Support new product launches by developing and validating tooling solutions
- Analyze and improve existing tooling to increase throughput, reduce downtime, and enhance product quality
- Troubleshoot tooling and process issues on the production floor
- Manage tooling lifecycle including maintenance, repair, and replacement strategies
- Work with external vendors and suppliers on tooling fabrication and modifications
- Implement lean manufacturing principles, including continuous improvement and waste reduction initiatives
- Develop and maintain documentation such as tooling drawings, specifications, and work instructions
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years of experience in tooling design or manufacturing engineering (varies by level)
- Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, and assembly processes
- Experience with GD&T and blueprint reading
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in CNC machining, injection molding, stamping, or casting environments
- Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher)
- Experience with automation and process optimization
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems
