Position Summary
The Route Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily waste and recycling collection routes to ensure safe, efficient, and timely service delivery. This role manages driver performance, route productivity, customer service issues, and operational compliance while acting as a key link between dispatch, drivers, and operations leadership.
Key Responsibilities Route Oversight & Performance Management
- Supervise daily residential, commercial, and roll-off collection routes
- Monitor driver productivity, route completion, and on-time performance
- Ensure adherence to company policies, safety standards, and DOT regulations
- Review route reports and identify inefficiencies or service gaps
Driver Management & Support
- Provide leadership, coaching, and support to drivers and helpers
- Conduct ride-alongs to evaluate performance and safety compliance
- Address attendance, conduct, and performance issues as needed
- Assist with onboarding and training of new drivers
Operational Coordination
- Work closely with dispatch to manage route changes, delays, and service issues
- Coordinate with maintenance for vehicle breakdowns or repairs
- Support coverage planning for absences, holidays, or increased volume
- Ensure all scheduled stops are completed daily
Customer Service & Issue Resolution
- Resolve escalated customer service complaints related to missed pickups or delays
- Coordinate service adjustments (container swaps, extra pickups, new accounts)
- Maintain strong relationships with commercial and municipal customers when needed
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and company safety policies
- Conduct safety audits and incident investigations
- Lead toolbox talks and safety meetings with drivers
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe vehicle operation
Reporting & Administrative Duties
- Track route performance metrics (cost per stop, productivity, fuel usage)
- Document incidents, accidents, and service exceptions
- Assist operations management with reporting and performance analysis
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma required; associate degree preferred
- 2–5 years of experience in waste, recycling, transportation, or logistics operations
- Prior experience as a driver, dispatcher, or operations lead strongly preferred
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, field-heavy environment
Preferred Industry Experience
- Waste & recycling operations (front-load, roll-off, residential routes)
- DOT compliance and CDL driver oversight
- Familiarity with route optimization and fleet tracking systems
- Experience managing union or non-union driver teams
Tools & Systems
- Route management software (AMCS, Routeware, RTA, etc.)
- GPS fleet tracking systems
- Microsoft Excel / reporting dashboards
- Dispatch and service ticketing systems
Work Environment
- Combination of field and office work
- Daily interaction with drivers in trucks and yard environments
- Fast-paced operational setting with early morning start times
- Occasional overtime based on route demands or service disruptions
