Structural Steel Project Manager – Fabrication

Location: Flexible / Remote with Travel
Travel: 25–50% across the Eastern United States

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Project Manager to oversee the fabrication lifecycle of commercial and industrial steel projects across the Eastern U.S. This role is responsible for managing projects from contract award through completion of fabrication, ensuring all detailing, procurement, scheduling, and production milestones are met. The ideal candidate has a strong background in steel fabrication operations and thrives in a production-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage structural steel projects from award through completion of fabrication

  • Serve as the primary liaison between clients, engineers, detailers, and fabrication facilities

  • Oversee detailing schedules, shop drawing approvals, and RFI processes

  • Track material procurement, mill orders, and delivery schedules

  • Monitor fabrication progress, production schedules, and shop workloads

  • Ensure projects meet budget, schedule, and quality expectations

  • Review and manage change orders impacting fabrication scope

  • Conduct regular shop visits to fabrication facilities

  • Coordinate internally with estimating, detailing, purchasing, and production teams

  • Identify risks in schedule, material, or design and proactively resolve issues

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication project management

  • Strong understanding of detailing, shop drawings, and fabrication workflows

  • Experience managing commercial or industrial steel packages

  • Ability to read and interpret structural and fabrication drawings

  • Knowledge of material procurement and mill lead times

  • Strong project scheduling, budgeting, and communication skills

  • Willingness to travel 25–50% to fabrication shops and client meetings

  • Proficient with project management tools and Microsoft Office

Preferred Experience

  • Background working directly for a steel fabricator

  • Experience with large fabrication packages ($5M+)

  • Familiarity with AISC standards and quality systems

  • Experience working with Tekla, SDS/2, or similar detailing platforms
