Supports project engineers by conducting research, planning, and assisting in the design of mechanical components, processes, products, and tooling. Contributes to the development and enhancement of various mechanical systems.
Work Range:Involves a broad scope of responsibilities, including design, drafting, system administration, and programming-related tasks.
Experience Level: 2 to 5 years
Education:Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
ResponsibilitiesManufacturing Support:
- Machinery Design & Research: Assists with research, design, detailing, and documentation of machine functions, testing, and programming for software applications. Participates in machine layout and configuration. Example equipment includes tapping, spinning, and assembly machines.
- Equipment Installation & Customization: May oversee the installation of new equipment tailored to specific applications, such as unique sizing, specialized control systems, and orientation adjustments (e.g., horizontal vs. vertical).
- Systems Development: Supports engineers in researching and implementing cost-saving measures such as waste-reduction strategies, automated die-change systems, part-transfer mechanisms, press automation, tooling transfer solutions, scrap-removal processes, and part-gauging systems.
- Prototyping & Testing: Designs, develops, and refines prototypes, performs modifications, and troubleshoots issues.
- Technical Documentation & Training: Creates and maintains engineering documents, operation manuals, and training materials related to mechanical and electrical systems.
- Continuous Improvement: Stays informed about new technologies and recommends applicable new equipment. Analyzes equipment failures to suggest enhancements and process improvements.
- FMEA & Equipment Reliability: Leads or assists in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to enhance system reliability.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Works on interdisciplinary projects, making modifications to existing equipment when necessary.
- Production & Maintenance Support: Assists in maintaining production continuity, providing troubleshooting and repair support for mechanical devices, sensors, and automated systems.
- Control System Documentation: Develops system documentation, including charts and schematics covering system functionality, deviations from design specifications, troubleshooting guides, and maintenance procedures. Conducts training on modifications.
- Vendor & Equipment Research: Evaluates and recommends commercially available equipment to meet project requirements.
- Project Scheduling & Documentation: Establishes and tracks project timelines. Maintains design records and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) for continuous improvement.
Tooling Development:
- Transfer & Progressive Tooling: Assists engineers in evaluating customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility. Contributes to the design of tooling, gages, sensors, and control interfaces.
- Design & Continuous Improvement: Develops tooling solutions that integrate with machines, hardware, and software. Documents designs and updates ECNs to ensure ongoing improvements.
General Responsibilities:
- Concept & Prototype Development: Translates engineering concepts and requirements into prototype parts, tooling, and part-handling systems.
- Technical Drafting: Creates and updates drawings for components and assemblies in both print and digital formats.
- Bill of Materials & Vendor Coordination: Prepares and updates bills of materials (BOMs) while working with external vendors to source materials.
- Tooling & Quality Control: Updates tooling prints after testing and ensures quality control measures are met for part inspection.
- Project Participation: Takes on various assignments at different levels, collaborating with teams to design manufacturing processes. Responsibilities may include material procurement, scheduling coordination, troubleshooting design issues, and recommending tooling modifications.
- Additional Responsibilities: Performs other duties based on customer or product requirements as assigned by the supervisor.
