Director / Vice President of Engineering (HVAC/Plumbing)

Location: San Jose, CA
Salary: $160,000 – $280,000 annually + Full Benefits
Schedule: Full-Time | Executive Leadership | MEP Design-Build Environment

A highly respected and well-established mechanical contractor in Northern California is seeking a Director or Vice President of Engineering to lead its in-house design operations. Known for delivering technically complex HVAC and plumbing solutions across commercial, institutional, and life science markets, this firm is poised for continued growth and innovation.

This is a strategic leadership role with oversight of multidisciplinary engineering teams, processes, and project execution. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, proven people leadership, and a strong background in design-build delivery.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee all engineering operations, including mechanical and plumbing design, drafting, and coordination

  • Set and implement design standards, quality control processes, and project delivery strategies

  • Provide executive-level oversight on large, high-profile projects from concept through construction

  • Lead, mentor, and grow high-performing engineering teams across multiple office locations

  • Collaborate with preconstruction, project management, and field operations to ensure alignment and constructability

  • Serve as the technical authority and decision-maker for complex design challenges

  • Maintain strong client relationships and contribute to long-term strategic planning


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in mechanical system design and engineering leadership, preferably in a design-build or contractor setting

  • Proven track record leading multi-discipline engineering teams on large commercial or institutional projects

  • Expertise in Revit and AutoCAD, with a strong understanding of BIM coordination workflows

  • Experience working on healthcare, life science, laboratory, or similarly complex building types

  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills
