Environmental Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring that all waste collection, recycling, transfer, and disposal operations comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. This role oversees permitting, reporting, audits, and environmental risk management across multiple operational sites such as landfills, transfer stations, and recycling facilities.
The position plays a critical role in maintaining regulatory compliance with agencies such as the EPA, state environmental departments, and local municipalities.
Key Responsibilities Regulatory Compliance & Oversight
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations (EPA, RCRA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, etc.)
- Manage permits for landfills, transfer stations, and recycling facilities
- Monitor operational compliance with environmental standards and permit conditions
- Conduct routine site inspections and environmental audits
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare and submit required environmental reports (air, water, waste, emissions)
- Maintain compliance records and documentation for regulatory agencies
- Track environmental performance metrics and compliance KPIs
Site & Field Support
- Visit operational sites to assess compliance and environmental risks
- Work closely with landfill operators, MRF managers, and hauling operations
- Investigate environmental incidents, spills, or violations
Safety & Risk Management
- Partner with EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) teams to reduce risk exposure
- Develop corrective action plans for violations or audit findings
- Ensure proper hazardous waste handling and disposal procedures
Agency & Stakeholder Interaction
- Serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections
- Support responses to agency inquiries, audits, and enforcement actions
- Coordinate with municipal and private contract stakeholders when needed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
- 3–7+ years of environmental compliance or EHS experience
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA and state-level)
- Experience in industrial, waste management, recycling, or manufacturing environments preferred
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred Experience (Waste & Recycling Industry)
- Landfill or transfer station compliance experience
- Familiarity with air permits, groundwater monitoring, and emissions reporting
- Experience with hazardous waste or industrial waste streams
- Knowledge of recycling facility (MRF) operations
Tools & Systems
- Environmental reporting systems (EMS platforms)
- Microsoft Excel / data tracking dashboards
- Regulatory filing systems (state EPA portals)
- GIS or site monitoring tools (preferred but not required)
Work Environment
- Combination of office and field work
- Frequent travel to operational sites (landfills, transfer stations, recycling centers)
- Exposure to industrial environments and outdoor conditions
- Fast-paced, compliance-driven environment with regulatory deadlines
