Job Description

Structural Design Engineers ensure the stability and safety of our construction methods and temporary work structures. A design engineer collaborates with third party designers, our construction team, and other stakeholders to create designs which provide our team with a competitive advantage while ensuring safe construction methods and a project delivered timely and within budget.

We are seeking a Design Engineer working in the heavy, civil construction industry (Bridges, Locks and dams…i.e. no buildings) and ideally one who focuses on temporary works –  things we build onsite as part of our construction methods for building the permanent structure. Examples include: falsework, engineered lifts, temporary custom scaffolds, special concrete forms, cofferdams, etc.

Design Engineer Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creatively brainstorm with estimating and project teams on conceptual designs and potential value-engineering components
  • Evaluate loads and outside forces to verify structural soundness of new construction components, falsework, and existing structures for work methods to be employed
  • Design structures, such as bridge erection falsework, custom scaffolding, rigging apparatuses, andother access components
  • Create structural models by using computer-aided design software
  • Adhere to company Design and Inspection of Temporary Structures and Construction Devices
  • Complete field inspection of critical fabrications/falsework prior to loading.
  • Aid in conducting field investigations and measurements as necessary for design on connecting components
  • Follow construction safety guidelines
  • Choose appropriate materials based on structural specifications and material availability
  • Review plans and specifications for standards in constructability
  • Evaluate in-house work plans on design critical components
  • Coordinate projects with 3d party design professionals, managing their progress to stay on budget and on schedule
  • Prepare and allocate design proposal and budgets for use by project managers
  • Collaborate with project teams to develop engineered solutions for job needs
  • Quality control design review other in-house designs as required
  • Review and audit internal design processes to ensure standards are met and evolved as necessary

Design Engineer Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Structural engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • 5+ years of heavy civil engineering design experience
  • Highly proficient in Structural Analysis
  • Structural analysis software (RISA Suite preferred)
  • AutoCAD / Civil 3D experience for staging / modeling required, TEKLA a plus
  • Data-driven mindset with excellent mathematical skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Highly proficient in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent innovative and collaborative capabilities
  • Willingness to Travel occasionally to project sites

Competitive Base Salary Depending on Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience: $115k - $140k
  • 10-15 years of experience and management experience: $150k - $180k
    (top range is negotiable for "the LeBron of temp works")

This person could be remote, so long as they understand they may need to come to the office or go to a jobsite periodically i.e. realistically <20% of their time. We would have them here in the office for onboarding and then the occasional visit to see us or something they have designed.
