Senior Construction Accountant

A well-established mechanical contractor is seeking a Senior Construction Accountant to join its accounting team. This position is ideal for an accounting professional with construction industry experience who enjoys working closely with project teams while maintaining involvement in broader accounting operations.
This role combines project accounting, contract administration, billing, compliance, and financial reporting responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage customer billings, including complex contract billing and AIA billings
- Maintain project accounting records, including contract values, budgets, estimates, and change orders
- Reconcile monthly divisional revenue and assist with financial reporting activities
- Enter and maintain project estimates within company software
- Maintain job master files and ensure project information remains accurate and up to date
- Manage subcontractor documentation, including certificates of insurance and compliance requirements
- Maintain subcontract files and ensure insurance requirements are current
- Assist vendors and suppliers with payment inquiries related to pay-when-paid contracts
- Support annual audit activities and reporting requirements
- Prepare annual 1099 filings
- Cross-train and provide support in accounts payable, payroll, cash posting, billing, job setup, and subcontract administration
- Perform additional accounting and administrative responsibilities as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
- 3+ years of accounting experience
- Construction accounting experience strongly preferred
- Experience with project accounting, job costing, and contract administration
- Familiarity with:
- AIA Billing
- Schedule of Values (SOV)
- Change Orders
- Lien Waivers
- Time & Material Billing
- Tax Exemptions and Use Tax
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
