Job Description

A growing financial institution is seeking a Portfolio Manager Team Lead to join its commercial banking division in Holland, MI. This role manages the administration of a sizable commercial loan portfolio while leading and mentoring a team of Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts. The position blends portfolio management, credit oversight, team leadership, and partnership with commercial banking teams to support growth and risk management.

What You’ll Do

  • Assign, manage, and prioritize workflow across a team of Portfolio Managers and Analysts.

  • Mentor and coach team members, auditing work for accuracy and providing timely feedback.

  • Partner with commercial banking teams to ensure new business activities are prioritized while renewals, annual reviews, covenant testing, and exception management are handled in line with policies.

  • Directly manage a select portfolio of complex and high-value commercial relationships, including underwriting renewals, analyzing financials, covenant testing, and monitoring risk ratings.

  • Review credit approval presentations for accuracy, risk identification, and structural soundness.

  • Provide quality control by reviewing underwriting work to ensure thorough analysis and policy compliance before escalation.

  • Act as the primary liaison between credit and lending teams, ensuring structures align with the bank’s risk appetite and portfolio expectations.

  • Contribute to employee development through mentoring, career planning, and performance feedback.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or accounting; Master’s preferred.

  • Formal credit training with strong knowledge of credit principles, risk assessment, and policy application.

  • 10+ years of financial services experience with commercial credit expertise.

  • Experience leading or mentoring a team strongly preferred.

  • Proven ability to manage a large commercial portfolio including lines of credit, term loans, and commercial real estate.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to partner effectively with banking teams.
