Job Snapshot

Job Description

Head of Accounting

This is not a back-office accounting role — this is a seat at the table.

Our credit union is in a growth phase, and we’re looking for a strategic, hands-on accounting leader who wants to influence decisions, build structure, and make a measurable impact. You’ll work directly with executive leadership, gain visibility with the board, and help shape the financial direction of an institution deeply rooted in its community.

If you’re currently feeling boxed into a transactional role, this is an opportunity to step into true leadership with influence, autonomy, and upward mobility.

Position Summary

The Head of Accounting will lead all accounting functions for a growing credit union, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong financial controls while contributing to broader financial strategy. This role blends execution + leadership + strategy, ideal for someone ready to elevate beyond pure accounting into organizational impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all accounting operations: general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and fixed assets
  • Own the month-end and year-end close process with a focus on efficiency and accuracy
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Ensure full compliance with National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) regulations and call reporting
  • Act as the primary point of contact for audits, exams, and regulatory interactions
  • Build, refine, and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies
  • Partner with the CFO and executive team on budgeting, forecasting, and strategic initiatives
  • Provide insight into financial performance, trends, and opportunities for growth
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team
  • Drive process improvements, automation, and system enhancements

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
  • 7–12+ years of accounting experience in a bank or credit union
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to build and develop teams
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience working with auditors, regulators, and executive leadership
  • Ability to think beyond debits and credits — connecting accounting to business strategy

What Makes You a Fit (Intangibles)

  • You want more visibility and influence in your role
  • You’re comfortable rolling up your sleeves while still thinking strategically
  • You enjoy improving processes and building structure in a growing organization
  • You can communicate confidently with leadership and the board
  • You take ownership — and want to be counted on

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary + performance bonus
  • Strong benefits package (health, dental, vision)
  • Retirement plan with employer match
  • Generous PTO
  • Long-term growth opportunity within executive leadership

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a role where you can own the accounting function, influence leadership decisions, and grow into a broader financial leadership seat, this is it.
