JOB SUMMARY
The Purchasing Assistant supports purchasing activities within the steel and metal manufacturing environment by assisting with procurement processes, coordinating supplier communications, and ensuring timely acquisition of raw materials, components, and services. This role works closely with the purchasing team to support production needs and maintain efficient inventory levels.
EXPERIENCE
Associate’s degree or bachelor's degree preferred in business, supply chain management, or a related field.
1-3 years of experience in procurement or purchasing, preferably in the steel, metals, or manufacturing industry.
Familiarity with procurement of steel products, raw materials, and MRO supplies.
Experience using ERP or procurement software systems.
Basic knowledge of inventory control and materials management in a manufacturing environment.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS
Good communication skills, able to interact effectively with suppliers and internal teams.
Attention to detail and accuracy in processing purchase orders and maintaining records.
Basic understanding of steel and metal products, including raw materials and tubular pole structures preferred.
Ability to follow established procedures and corporate purchasing policies.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in processing purchase orders for steel raw materials, components, MRO supplies, and services.
Communicate with steel suppliers and vendors to obtain quotes, confirm orders, and track deliveries.
Maintain and update supplier records and documentation ensuring compliance with company policies.
Support purchasing and inventory teams by monitoring stock levels and coordinating material availability.
Assist with vendor evaluations and updating supplier performance records.
Prepare and support the generation of purchasing reports related to steel and metal procurement activities.
Coordinate with internal departments such as production, engineering, and sales to meet material requirements.
Help with routine inventory cycle counts and report discrepancies or damaged materials.
Organize and maintain purchasing documentation and contracts related to steel products and supplies.
Follow corporate purchasing procedures and assist in ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards in the steel industry.
