Equity Partner-Insurance Coverage (Liability)

Location: Chicago, IL

We are seeking an Equity Partner with deep experience in liability insurance coverage. The senior coverage attorney must be able to immediately assume responsibility for existing liability coverage matters and play a leadership role within the Insurance Coverage practice.

Portable business is welcomed but not required. The primary need is for a partner with the judgment, experience, and technical depth to service sophisticated institutional coverage work from day one.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage complex third-party liability coverage matters involving:
    • Commercial General Liability (CGL)
    • Automobile liability
    • Excess and umbrella programs
    • Additional insured and manuscript endorsements
  • Provide strategic advice on core coverage issues, including:
    • Duty to defend and duty to indemnify
    • Trigger of coverage
    • Allocation and exhaustion
    • Notice and late notice
    • Exclusions and “other insurance” provisions
  • Draft, review, and sign coverage opinions, reservation of rights letters, and denial or partial denial letters.
  • Lead insurance coverage litigation, including declaratory judgment actions, dispositive motion practice, and coverage-focused discovery.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for insurer and insurance-industry clients.
  • Supervise and mentor attorneys within the Insurance Coverage group and collaborate with attorneys handling underlying liability litigation.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years practicing insurance coverage law, with a primary focus on liability coverage
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex coverage matters
  • Extensive experience drafting and signing coverage opinions and position letters
  • Meaningful experience leading insurance coverage litigation

Additional Considerations

  • Experience advising insurers or insurance-industry clients is strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with insurance defense backgrounds will be considered only if they demonstrate sustained, senior-level responsibility for liability coverage analysis and coverage litigation.
