CNC Setup Operator

Location: San Antonio Metro Area

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced CNC Setup Operator to set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC machining equipment used to produce precision components. This role requires strong blueprint reading, hands-on setup experience, quality inspection skills, and the ability to make offsets and minor program edits as needed.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently, holding tight tolerances, verifying first pieces, and keeping production running safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, turning centers, and/or mill-turn machines.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, setup sheets, and job travelers.
  • Install and qualify tooling, fixtures, vises, chucks, collets, and other workholding.
  • Load CNC programs and verify correct setup before production.
  • Perform dry runs, prove-outs, and first-piece inspections.
  • Read and understand G-code and M-code.
  • Monitor machine operation and make adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, indicators, thread gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Troubleshoot machine alarms, tooling issues, chatter, finish problems, and dimensional issues.
  • Change inserts, tools, and fixtures as required.
  • Complete quality documentation and production paperwork accurately.
  • Deburr parts and maintain clean, organized work areas.
  • Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of CNC setup and operation experience preferred.
  • Experience setting up CNC mills, lathes, or turning centers.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand basic GD&T.
  • Ability to read, edit, or make minor adjustments to CNC programs.
  • Experience with Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, Mazak, Siemens, or similar CNC controls preferred.
  • Strong understanding of tooling, speeds, feeds, offsets, and workholding.
  • Proficient with precision measuring tools.
  • Ability to hold tight tolerances and perform first-piece inspections.
  • Strong shop math skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be dependable, safety-minded, and quality-focused.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multi-axis machines, mill-turn, Swiss, or live tooling.
  • Experience with aerospace, defense, medical, automotive, energy, or other tight-tolerance manufacturing.
  • Experience with CMM, optical comparator, or advanced inspection equipment.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement.
