Position Summary
This role supports the perioperative team in delivering safe, high-quality care to surgical patients before, during, and after operative procedures. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for maintaining a sterile field, ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are prepared and available, and assisting the surgical team throughout procedures. This position requires strong knowledge of surgical techniques, aseptic principles, infection control, and medical ethics.
The Surgical Technologist also participates in training newly assigned personnel and maintains patient safety and confidentiality at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist professional staff in providing care for the operative patient before, during, and after surgery
- Ensure proper instrumentation and supplies are available on the sterile field and in the operating room
- Perform scrub and circulating duties in the operating room
- Gather, check, and open all required supplies and equipment for surgical procedures
- Set up sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, and equipment
- Perform initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with circulating staff
- Assist with gowning, gloving, and patient draping
- Anticipate and prepare additional instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures
- Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon as needed
- Maintain strict sterile technique throughout procedures
- Prepare and appropriately handle and pass off surgical specimens
- Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
- Operate clinical equipment safely and appropriately
- Communicate effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and families
- Maintain current clinical knowledge across all patient age groups
- Follow all hospital policies and procedures, including attendance and dress code
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
- Ability to perform duties proficiently in a specialty surgical environment
- Strong communication skills (oral and written English)
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and lift/push/pull up to 25 lbs
- Strong organizational skills, clinical reasoning, and independent judgment
- Understanding of aseptic technique, infection control, and patient safety principles
- Ability to work effectively with clinical equipment and hospital systems
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of continuous operating room experience
- Current Surgical Technologist certification
- Current BLS certification
Physical Requirements
- Full range of body motion, including manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination
- Prolonged standing and walking during surgical procedures
- Ability to lift, move, and reposition patients as needed
- Ability to transport and handle equipment and supplies up to 25+ lbs
