Job Description

Project Accountant - Commercial Construction

Seeking a detail-oriented Project Accountant to support multiple construction projects from startup through closeout. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys collaborating with project teams, and takes pride in keeping project financials accurate, organized, and on track.

The Project Accountant will work closely with Project Managers, subcontractors, vendors, and the accounting team to manage billing, accounts payable, compliance documentation, and project financial reporting.

Responsibilities

Billing & Accounts Receivable

  • Prepare and submit owner billings in accordance with contract requirements
  • Process AIA billings, lien waivers, sworn statements, and supporting documentation
  • Track billing status and assist with collections efforts when needed
  • Ensure all billing deadlines are met accurately and on time

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management

  • Review and process subcontractor and vendor invoices
  • Verify proper coding and routing of invoices for approval
  • Maintain subcontractor compliance documentation, including certificates of insurance, W-9s, and lien waivers
  • Respond to vendor and subcontractor payment inquiries

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain organized electronic project and accounting files
  • Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and audit-ready
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests
  • Support project closeout activities and final billing processes

Team Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Project Managers and the accounting team
  • Communicate professionally with clients, subcontractors, and vendors
  • Provide timely responses to project and financial inquiries
  • Support process improvements and operational efficiencies

Qualifications

  • Experience in construction accounting, project accounting, or a related accounting role
  • Understanding of AIA billing, lien waivers, subcontractor compliance, and construction documentation
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
  • Self-motivated with a high level of accountability and follow-through
  • Proficiency with accounting and project management software is preferred
