Operations Manager — Yard & Sales

Location: Eastern SD (Relocation Assistance Available)

Type: Full-time | On-site

Reports to: Owner

A well-established building materials and lumber company is seeking a hands-on Operations Manager to oversee yard operations and support sales activities at one of their flagship locations. This role balances operational leadership (yard, inventory, deliveries) with customer-facing sales coordination — ensuring product availability, timely dispatch, and outstanding service for both contractors and retail customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead daily yard operations: receiving, inventory control, staging, and yard safety.
  • Supervise and coach yard, delivery, and counter staff; manage schedules and performance reviews.
  • Coordinate delivery and dispatch services, including boom truck / forklift operations and driver scheduling.
  • Partner with sales teams to ensure accurate estimates, timely order fulfillment, and high-level customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain yard organization and implement loss-prevention and quality control measures.
  • Monitor operational KPIs and budget drivers; implement process improvements to boost throughput and reduce costs.
  • Ensure full compliance with safety standards while fostering a culture of safety.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and training of yard and delivery staff.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of operations or yard management experience in lumber, building materials, distribution, or related environment.
  • Strong supervisory experience with proven ability to manage frontline teams.
  • Customer service focus with ability to support sales/counter activities.
  • Solid mechanical aptitude and familiarity with forklifts and delivery trucks.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in lumberyards, building materials, or construction supply retail.
  • Exposure to budget oversight and operational metrics.
  • Spanish language skills a plus.
