Tax Manager — Los Angeles, CA

Full-time · Public Accounting

We're seeking an accomplished Tax Manager to join our Los Angeles practice and help lead our tax team to the next level. You'll own a significant client portfolio, drive technical excellence, and play a pivotal role in growing the practice — with a clear path to Senior Manager and beyond.

Key functions

  • Manage and review complex tax returns and advisory work for a diverse portfolio of high-value clients including individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts, and estates
  • Serve as the primary client relationship owner — leading planning meetings, delivering strategic tax advice, and anticipating client needs proactively
  • Oversee full engagement lifecycle: scoping, staffing, budgeting, billing, and final delivery
  • Direct and develop a team of supervisors, seniors, and associates — setting performance expectations and fostering a culture of growth
  • Lead complex tax research on emerging issues and translate findings into actionable client strategies
  • Partner with partners on business development — identifying cross-sell opportunities, contributing to proposals, and expanding the client base
  • Manage IRS and state tax controversies, audits, and high-stakes client correspondence
  • Monitor and interpret federal and California tax legislative changes; communicate implications firm-wide and to clients
  • Contribute to firm initiatives including process improvements, technical training, and recruiting efforts

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; Master's in Taxation preferred
  • Active CPA license required
  • Advanced technical expertise in federal and California tax law across a broad range of entity types and industries
  • Demonstrated success managing a book of business and deepening client relationships
  • Strong leadership track record — managing, mentoring, and retaining high-performing teams
  • Skilled in engagement management: budgeting, billing, realization, and profitability
  • Business development instincts with the ability to identify and pursue new opportunities
  • Proficiency in CCH Axcess, GoSystem, ProConnect, or similar tax platforms
  • Exceptional communication and executive presence — comfortable presenting to C-suite and high-net-worth clients
