Special Counsel, Civil Litigation (5+ Years), Asheville, North Carolina

About the opportunity
An established civil defense litigation firm is looking for an experienced Special Counsel to join its growing Civil Litigation practice in Asheville. You'll step into a thriving practice, handle sophisticated litigation, and help expand the firm's presence in Western North Carolina. The role comes with significant responsibility and direct client contact, and you'll work alongside experienced trial attorneys in a collaborative environment. Asheville is your home office, with a flexible hybrid arrangement.

What you'll do

• Independently manage a diverse civil defense caseload from start to finish
• Develop case strategies built around each client's goals
• Take and defend depositions of parties, fact witnesses, experts, and corporate representatives
• Draft and argue motions, briefs, and other substantive filings
• Represent clients at mediations, arbitrations, hearings, and trials
• Do the legal research and analysis behind your strategy and recommendations
• Keep clients updated on case developments, risk, and resolution options
• Work with attorneys across practice groups on complex matters
• Mentor junior attorneys and help grow the practice

What you bring

• A J.D. from an accredited law school and an active North Carolina law license
• At least 5 years of civil litigation defense experience
• Experience across every phase of litigation, including trial and arbitration
• Strong research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills
• Excellent communication and relationship skills, with the ability to act as a trusted advisor to clients and insurance professionals
• Strong organization and time management, plus the ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Already living in Western North Carolina, or open to relocating there

Salary commensurate with candidate experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
