Ranch Hand/Manager Description:

A well-established, family-owned ranch in North Dakota currently in need of an experienced person for a Ranch Hand/Manager role. This person will start out as a Ranch Hand and as they prove their ability they will likely move into more of a management position allowing the Owners to focus their time and attention away from the day-to-day operations of the ranch. Their is also a succession plan with potential opportunity for the right person to become a part of the operation. 

Company details:

  • Cow/Calf operation consisting of 250-300 head of cattle
    • Calving around 60-head annually
  • 5k-6k acre ranch used for grazing and hay production
    • Produce around 1,000 round bales annually
  • Spring-fed water system - no tanks
  • Candidates are welcome to bring their own horses with feed provided and access to prairie pasture
  • Competitive pay DOE with a 3,000 sq ft house and pickup provided

Ranch Hand/Manager Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day care of the cattle and hay production
  • Monitor herd health and nutrition while working with their consulting Vet and Nutritionist
  • Work cattle on horseback
  • Sort, move, and work cattle throughout the year
  • Spring calf movement and fall weaning
  • Manage the grazing rotation program and hay production/feeding
  • Maintain and monitor the spring-fed water system
  • Assist with breeding, vaccinations, treatments, and routine herd health
  • Maintain fences, facilities, and overall ranch infrastructure
  • Operate and maintain ranch equipment (ex. ATVs, 4-wheelers, and pickups)
  • Work closely with ownership

Ranch Hand/Manager Requirements:

  • Strong horseback skills working cattle
  • 3+ years of hands-on cattle/ranching experience on a cow/calf operation who understands how to run and manage a herd
    • Must be comfortable making decisions
  • Keen eye for cattle health
  • Solid maintenance knowledge and skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership of the day-to-day operations as if it were your own ranch
