Job Description

Attorney – Insurance Coverage & Policy Interpretation

There is a fundamental difference between defending an insured and advising an insurer on its coverage obligations.

This position is about the latter.

Our practice advises insurance carriers on complex questions arising from the language of commercial insurance policies and the law governing their interpretation.

We are seeking an attorney who already understands that work.

A typical matter may require you to examine the underlying claim, analyze the insuring agreement and endorsements, identify applicable exclusions or limitations, research controlling authority, and ultimately advise the carrier whether it has a duty to defend or indemnify.

Sometimes the answer is straightforward. Often, it isn't.

The issues can involve competing policy provisions, additional insured status, multiple carriers, allocation, excess and umbrella layers, first-party property, professional liability, bad faith allegations, or unsettled questions of insurance law.

Your job is to find the answer—and explain it exceptionally well.

That makes this a practice for an attorney who genuinely enjoys research, writing, contractual interpretation, and complex legal analysis.

Coverage opinions and reservation of rights letters are a substantial part of the work. Attorneys also advise claims professionals directly and handle the legal briefing that arises when coverage obligations are disputed through declaratory judgment proceedings or appeals.

-We are seeking Actual coverage experience: interpreting policies, identifying coverage issues, researching insurance law, preparing written coverage analyses, and advising carriers regarding their contractual obligations.

--Not simply insurance industry exposure. Not primarily bodily injury or general liability defense.

-Candidates must be licensed in Illinois and capable of independently handling sophisticated coverage matters while collaborating with other coverage attorneys and carrier clients.

-Experience with CGL, professional liability, property, first-party claims, third-party liability coverage, excess and umbrella policies, bad faith, or coverage appeals is beneficial.

The position offers competitive compensation based on experience, bonus opportunities, comprehensive benefits, and a flexible work environment.

If your strength is understanding what a policy says, determining what it means, and putting that analysis into persuasive writing, this is the practice we're looking to add to.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, age, color, sex (including pregnancy), religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other status protected by applicable laws or regulations.
