Job Description

We are searching for a driven, relationship-focused Lumber Trader to help grow our trading desk and expand our market reach. The Lumber Trader will be responsible for sourcing product, managing supplier and customer relationships, and executing profitable trades while keeping inventory levels low. You should have deep knowledge of your markets and the ability to make quick, informed decisions in a fast-moving environment. To be successful as a Lumber Trader, you should be a skilled multitasker with strong communication abilities and a commitment to excellent partnership with customers and suppliers. A top-tier Lumber Trader will demonstrate initiative, market insight, and consistent follow-through.

Lumber Trader Responsibilities:

  • Managing and growing a book of business with active buyer and supplier relationships.
  • Sourcing lumber and building materials from mills, manufacturers, and other suppliers.
  • Selling full truckloads and mixed loads to distributors, reloads, wholesalers, and other customers.
  • Monitoring market conditions, pricing changes, and supply/demand dynamics.
  • Executing back-to-back trades and maintaining minimal on-ground inventory.
  • Negotiating pricing, terms, and delivery schedules.
  • Providing customers with regular product updates, market insights, and pricing opportunities.
  • Coordinating logistics to ensure smooth and timely shipment of materials.
  • Maintaining accurate records of trades, margins, and customer activity.
  • Ensuring all trades comply with company policies and industry standards.

Lumber Trader Requirements:

  • High school diploma (Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required).
  • 2+ years of experience in lumber trading, commodity trading, or building materials sales.
  • Existing book of business or strong relationships within the lumber market.
  • Strong negotiation, pricing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage fast-paced, high-volume trading environments.
  • Knowledge of lumber species, grades, markets, and industry terminology.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Strong customer service mindset and respect for long-term partnerships.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working independently.
