Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and technically proficient Outside Sales Engineer to join our team. This role is responsible for driving new business growth while applying a strong technical understanding of HVAC, plumbing, piping, and mechanical systems. The successful candidate will leverage engineering knowledge to design solutions, consult with clients, and collaborate with internal teams to deliver projects that meet performance, budget, and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Prospect, qualify, and secure new business opportunities in commercial, industrial, and institutional markets.
Develop technical solutions that address client needs, including HVAC, chilled water, hydronic, steam, and plumbing systems.
Conduct site surveys to evaluate existing mechanical infrastructure, equipment capacities, and system performance.
Prepare detailed cost estimates, equipment selections, and technical proposals with support from the estimating and engineering teams.
Interpret construction drawings, schematics, and specifications to ensure proposals align with design intent and code requirements.
Collaborate with project managers and field operations to ensure smooth project handoff and execution.
Provide clients with consultative support on energy efficiency upgrades, equipment retrofits, and sustainability solutions (e.g., VFDs, heat recovery systems, high-efficiency boilers/chillers).
Stay current on industry codes and standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, and local building codes).
Maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities and update CRM with activity, forecasting, and market intelligence.
Represent the company at customer meetings, trade associations, and industry events.
Technical Requirements
Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems, including:
Air handling units (AHUs), rooftop units (RTUs), chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and VRF systems.
Hydronic and steam piping systems.
Pump selection and system head calculations.
Familiarity with mechanical/plumbing design concepts, load calculations, and duct/piping layouts.
Ability to perform basic heat transfer and fluid flow calculations.
Experience reviewing control sequences (DDC, BAS integration, VAV systems).
Understanding of mechanical equipment sizing, performance curves, and lifecycle cost analysis.
Knowledge of AutoCAD or Revit (reading and reviewing drawings preferred).
Familiarity with mechanical/electrical coordination in construction projects.
Working knowledge of energy efficiency technologies, retro-commissioning, and system optimization.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field preferred; equivalent technical experience considered.
3–5+ years of technical sales experience in mechanical contracting, HVAC equipment sales, or MEP consulting.
PE license a plus but not required.
