Job Summary: 

Under administrative direction, supervises daily machine shop operations and performs other duties, as assigned. 

Reports to: 

Manager of Manufacturing 

Provides Direction to: 

Supervisors, Lead persons, Tool Room, and CNC Programmers 

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Directly supervises daily manufacturing and insures show work orders follow schedule; 
  • Approves maintenance requests; 
  • Schedules machine downtime from production for maintenance work; 
  • Assigns or makes changes in job responsibilities for all supervisors and lead persons; 
  • Hires machine shop personnel; 
  • Trains supervisors and lead persons to improve their managerial abilities; 
  • Evaluates and approves engineering change orders relative to manufactured parts; 
  • Reads all evaluations and corrects them if necessary; 
  • Works with material review board to assist in disposition of material with questionable quality; 
  • Administers policies and procedures relative to machining, personnel, safety, and hazardous waste handling and disposal; 
  • Hires and disciplines supervisors and machine shop personnel; 
  • Regular punctuality, attendance, and absence reporting in conformance with company policies is essential to the successful performance of this position; and 
  • Fully comply with company rules, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure safe and effective operations. 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Any combination equivalent of, but not limited to, the following: 

Experience/Training/Education: 

Broad experience in machine shop management; high school graduate or equivalent; considerable knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques in manufacturing and environment; experience in budgeting practices; considerable training and experience in mechanics and machining applications; experience in computer terminal application and operation; training in hiring, discipline, personnel evaluation, and termination practices; and training in affirmative action plans and principles

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of machining practices and the mechanics involved; 
  • Capacity to evaluate, in writing or verbally, others’ abilities and productivity; 
  • Communicate effectively with management, supervision, employees, vendors, and contractors; 
  • Broad knowledge of manufacturing systems and use of computers; 
  • Must be able to formulate changes in manufacturing processes or justify changes in equipment to affect those processes; and 
  • Ability to lead, develop, prioritize, and delegate work.
