The Outside Sales Representative will be responsible for developing and managing relationships with contractors, builders, developers and existing accounts while identifying new business opportunities within an assigned territory. This individual will work closely with customers on residential and light commercial projects including homes, garages, decks, pole buildings, remodels, and other construction applications.
Success in this role requires strong communication skills, product knowledge, relationship-building ability, and a proactive approach to customer service and sales growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with contractors, builders, and customers within assigned territory
- Generate new business opportunities through prospecting, networking, and customer visits
- Prepare material estimates, quotes, and sales orders for construction projects
- Assist customers with product recommendations, pricing, and project planning
- Follow up on quotations and sales opportunities to close business and increase market share
- Coordinate with internal teams to ensure accurate order fulfillment and customer satisfaction
- Analyze customer needs and recommend product solutions that fit project requirements and budgets
- Maintain consistent communication with customers regarding timelines, deliveries, and project updates
- Monitor market trends, pricing, competition, and industry activity within the territory
- Participate in sales planning, forecasting, and territory growth strategies
- Maintain organized records of customer interactions, opportunities, and account activity
- Represent the company with professionalism, integrity, and strong customer service
Qualifications
- 2+ years of outside sales, contractor sales, or building materials sales experience preferred
- Strong understanding of construction materials including lumber, hardware, roofing, drywall, windows, doors, or related products
- Ability to read plans, perform takeoffs, and calculate material estimates is highly preferred
- Proven ability to build long-term customer relationships and grow accounts
- Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage a territory effectively
- Detail-oriented with strong math and estimating abilities
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Associate degree or industry-related experience preferred
