Fiber Optic Technician

Job Description:

Seeking a full-time fiber splicing technician responsible for maintenance and installation of new and existing fiber optics facilities. It includes Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) OSP facilities as well as provisioning electronics.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Maintain knowledge of all organizational policies.

· Ensures all installation work is done according to quality standards

· Access the fiber optic splicer enclosure and splice the necessary fibers

· Install fiber optic cables and CAT 5/6 cables. Identify and document all cables and boxes correctly.

· Perform testing and turn-ups of subscriber drops in both inside and outside plant environment

· Planning and acquiring supply needs

· Read, understand, and updated building drawings

· Running of phone and data cables, including fiber optic, audio, video, and security camera cabling

· Accurately OTDR test fiber (multimode and single mode) cables to required certification

· Test, diagnose and correct copper and optical fiber problems

· Maintain and reference industry standards including ANSI, EIAITIA and local and Low Voltage Code

· Work safely at all times utilizing the necessary Personal Protection Equipment

· Perform administrative tasks including, but not limited to, documenting test results and as-built, maintaining log books, providing labor summary reports, etc.

· Ability to properly instruct other technicians on techniques, works, etc., as needed to keep project work flowing

· Possess a high level of independent judgment within established procedures

· Perform other duties as requested by supervisor

 

Qualifications, Technical Skills, and/or Experience:

· Valid Driver’s License

· Finger & wrist dexterity & hand/eye coordination.

· Ability to work from heights such as man lifts, scissor lifts & rooftops utilizing proper fall protection.

· Ability to use small hand tools.

· Ability to use power tools.

· Climbing of stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolds.

· Ability to walk, stand, bend, lift to 75 lbs., and drive a vehicle.

· Proficient in MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, Visio, and PowerPoint

· FO Testing – OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) / PM (Power Meter) & LS (Light Source) Testing Ability to properly install both copper and fiber optic cables

· Ability to properly terminate copper & fiber cable (Cat5e, Cat6, single-mode, multi-mode etc.)

· Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve Telecommunications and Data/IT equipment issues as well as equipment maintenance within a designated territory.

· Fusion Splicing

· Cable & enclosure prep: bonding & grounding of all cables when necessary

· Aerial & underground splicing and cable installation

· Knowledge on fiber-optic networks and terms such as GPON, FTTH, FTTB, etc.

· Ability to properly create and install labels.

· Ability to perform all component and system testing.

· Ability to complete the tasks assigned in a timely manner.

· Ability to understand basic wiring diagrams and installation instructions.

· Ability to perform as crew leader as assigned. Crew leader assignments will be made based on project specifics and the demonstrated abilities of the individual.

· Ability to perform and document optical attenuation tests on single-mode and multi-mode optical strands.

· Excellent interpersonal skills.

· Accepts direction and feedback from Team Members and supervisor(s).

 

Education and Experience:

· Associates Degree or equivalent work experience

· Valid Driver’s license and satisfactory driving record

· 2-5 years’ experience installing and maintain fiber optic products and services

· Certified Fiber Optic Technician is a plus
